Designing Your Own Baby Graphic Onesie

This project is included in our Blessing Mommy and Me Pregnancy Box subscription.

Now that you’re expecting, maybe you’ve bought or been gifted some outfits for baby already. Who doesn’t love dressing up their new baby?

Even more fun are the adorable graphic tees you can find for little ones.

Here’s a few from Christianbook.com: Baby tee

Is it just me, or have you come across those cringy graphic tees for babies? I think to myself, did they really just put that adult word or phrase on their kid??

I guess whether it’s loving Jesus or something completely different, we get our kicks from seeing our children looking like and thinking like us…whether good, bad, or ugly.

But the point of this onesie project is to ask the question, “What makes my baby unique?”  Put another way, if God were to send you a graphic tee for your baby, what might He put on it?

Go ahead and ask Him!  Don’t think hard, just trust the voice of the Holy Spirit to give you a simple inspiration. He may just give you a clue about your baby’s identity or destiny!  It also could be a sweet reminder to bless or pray for your baby every time you dress them in it.

Now, go have some fun and design your own graphic tee. You can subscribe to our Blessing Mommy and Me Pregnancy Boxes and receive all the materials you need.

Here’s some step-by-step instructions:

  • Think about what you would want to write on the onesie. Ask the Lord!

Here are some examples:

  •  Baby’s name or initials
  • The meaning of baby’s name
  • Fruit of the Spirit (love, joy, peace…)
  • An expression or wording from scripture or a song (e.g., Lil’ blessing, miracle, wonderfully made, history maker, Imago Dei)
  • Some other word that God gives you for your child
  • Once you decide on your word, create your design first with a pencil on paper. Use a ruler and space your letters evenly.

  • When you’ve finished your design, color in your pencil marks with a thick black marker. This will serve as a tracing guide under your onesie.

  • Tape your design on a narrow piece of cardboard or card stock, insert it into the onesie, and tape it to the onesie. This will protect the onesie from paint leaking through to the back.

  • Align the first letter in your stencil to the first letter in your design. Tape the stencil to the onesie in a few spots.

  • Next, hold the stencil around the letter firmly with your fingers, ensuring it will not move while you use your dauber. Dab straight down, slowly and repeatedly, over the letter. Do not rub with the dauber or press down on an angle. Keep dabbing until the whole space is saturated with paint and all white disappears.

  • Carefully remove the stencil from the onesie to prevent smudging your work.

  • Clean off the stencil entirely, so you don’t leave residue in another area of the onesie.

  • Repeat all steps above until all letters and designs are complete.

  • If desired, use a tie-die kit to add a splash of color to your onesie.
